Understanding Funnel Metrics
7 min
this document reviews funnel metric concepts, how to build funnels in ashby and how to interpret the results building a funnel in ashby funnels are part of ashby's standard report template library simply navigate to reports > templates and select funnel report from the library by default, ashby's funnel report selects all job considerations (for greenhouse users applications, lever users opportunities) with interview activity in the last 6 months what goes into a funnel? how selections form a cohort when ashby's funnel report defaults to selecting all job considerations that had an interview in the last 6 months, a selection is taking place that selection results in a fixed group to analyze, sometimes referred to as a cohort the starting stage of the funnel shows the size of the cohort, giving a total count above the bar in the example above, a cohort of 1,962 job considerations were selected for analysis in the funnel as a single candidate can have multiple job considerations it's possible that an individual candidate contributes to a funnel multiple times, and progresses to different stages per job consideration completed job considerations only for a funnel to be accurate, it can only analyze job considerations that have completed their interview process (either hired or archived) as we do not know in advance how far any consideration will progress, the funnel will be skewed if any counting occurs prematurely interpreting funnel results reading our funnel report from left to right, we see that the first stage shows the total cohort size, as noted above the subsequent stages show a percent conversion from the prior step the 78 2% in the second stage is the percentage of the first stage that proceeded, and so on this percentage is sometimes referred to as a "passthrough rate" passthrough rates near 0% or 100% indicate that a stage is either extremely difficult, or extremely easy, respectively in such cases, it is often recommended you consult your hiring team to evaluate the process at that stage job considerations that skip a stage or are inserted into your interview process at a late stage, such as going straight to onsite, will be counted as having passed all earlier stages this is done to guarantee consistency of all numbers, otherwise funnels could have greater than 100% progress for a given stage funnels summarize progress, not activity it is common for funnel reports to be mistaken for activity reports as noted above, a funnel report is a combination of two things a set of stages, and a cohort the funnel report shows the summary outcome of many considerations over time, but it does not summarize when the activity at each stage took place a funnel report that shows 600 onsites is stating that 600 onsites took place amongst the job considerations selected in the cohort, but not when you may be able to infer roughly in what period those onsites took place from the definition of your cohort, but it is recommended you use an interview activity report or stage transition report for summarizing activity in a specific timeframe summary ashby's template funnel report examines job considerations that have completed their consideration by summarizing how far through the interview process they progressed an initial selection is made by selecting a timeframe and any combination of filters, which results in an initial group of considerations, sometimes referred to as a cohort the cohort is defined by your selection criteria, and the size is given by the initial bar in the funnel report the subsequent progress from stage to stage is expressed as a percentage of the prior stage, highlighting where great ease or difficulty is found in your interview process
