This document reviews dashboard filters and how to add or remove them from dashboards.

## Overview

Dashboard filters are a powerful feature in Ashby that allow you to add or configure filters at the dashboard level that can be quickly applied to all reports on a dashboard. They allow you to build dashboards that can be filtered to specific departments, recruiters, etc., without having to copy reports and dashboards.

## Add a filter and connect it

1. To add a filter, navigate to your dashboard (make sure you are on the Dashboard Edit View) and click `Add Filter`.
2. Find the field you would like to filter by. For filters attached to a user, use the `User` field. You will be able to identify what user role you are filtering for at the report level.
3. Connect the filter to each of the reports you want the filter to be applied to. When you click on the filter icon, you will be prompted to select/search for the field you want to attach the filter to. Pay attention to the subject the filter is anchored on. For example, a recruiter at the job level and the job consideration level could be different.
4. Green - All dashboard filters on the dashboard have been applied to the report
Grey - Some dashboard filters on the dashboard have been applied to the report
Red - No dashboard filters on the dashboard have been applied to the report
5. If you would like, you can require a filter to be applied to all of the reports on a dashboard. To do this, check the box next to `Require value`. You will see the alert below if any of the reports are not connected to the required filter.

Dashboard filters are applied in the dashboard view and will not be saved to the underlying reports.

### Viewing an underlying report on a dashboard with a filter

If you apply filters at the dashboard level, you can click the Go to Filtered Report icon to view the report. The unsaved dashboard filters will be applied when viewing the report (but will not be saved to the report automatically). You can click `Save` when viewing the filtered report to add the filter changes to your existing report. If you make any changes to the underlying report and save it, these changes will be reflected on the dashboard.

If you need to get to the underlying report without any dashboard filter context being applied, the action menu on any report tile provides the option (the three dots to the right of the `Go to Filtered Report` button) to go directly to the report via `Go to Report`.

## Delete a filter

To delete a dashboard filter, select the Trash icon next to the filter and click `Delete`.

### Can I set my dashboard filter to exclude certain values?

You can, yes. When you specify a value for your filter, you will see an `Is` dropdown between the filter type and the chosen value. You can use the dropdown and select `Is Not` to exclude the specified value from your results rather than only show values matching your filter.
